Woodruff, Chesnee select new athletic directors – Sports – GoUpstate

Two area high schools named new athletic directors on Friday.

Mike Morris is taking over at Woodruff, while James Hyatt is taking the reins at Chesnee.

Morris replaces Scott Lawson, who will step down at the end of the school year. Morris’ father, Cecil Morris, served as head football coach and athletic director at Duluth (Ga.) High School for over 30 years. Cecil Morris was the high school coach for former South Carolina running back and 1980 Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers.

Morris said that he’s excited about his first opportunity as an athletic director.

“I’ve been involved in athletics my whole life,” he said. “After 22 years of coaching, I felt like I was at a point in my career where I can make a difference. I’ve always wanted to be an athletic director (because) my dad was an athletic director.
